Rugby Equipment

There are many different types of rugby equipment that are useful for those playing rugby or training to play the game.

Here are some popular items you may need if you are playing or training at rugby:

Some popular types of rugby equipment include balls, knee supports, off field rugby shirts, head guards, rugby boots, inflatable wedges, rugby gloves, marking cones and team kit bags.

Rugby Balls

Although similar in appearance to the balls used in American football rugby balls are larger and heavier. Smaller rugby balls can be used for training exercises and junior games but in general a standard sized rugby ball is used.

Joint Supports

These are useful for injury prevention or to help you safely recover from an injury. Popular joint supports include knee supports and elbow supports as well as ankle and wrist supports. There are many other joints that can be supported with the right equipment. These supports are usually made of neoprene and are either fixed size or adjustable using a Velcro strap.

Off Field Rugby Shirts

These shirts are similar in appearance to regular rugby shirts except they are made of cotton and are not worn during play. They look like polo shirts but are usually striped or hooped and can have rugby insignia on them; sometimes from a local team, sometimes from a national team or sometimes just a general rugby icon not related to any team in particular. You can get an off field Wales rugby shirt should you so desire.

Head Guards

These are often worn in training and sometimes worn during play. Wearing a head guard is a great way to prevent an injury or to help you recover from one. They can soften blows to the head and help prevent cauliflower ear. See if you can find a Wales rugby shirt matching head guard.

Rugby Boots

Rugby boots look similar to regular football boots except they tend to be higher in the ankle area. This is to give extra support to the wearer that is not require in football. There are many makers of rugby boots and there are a large variety on sale.

Inflatable Wedges

These are great for training and allow rugby players to practice their taklking and charges. The heavier the pad the better as the extra size and weight will absorb most of the shock leaving the person holding it able to train for longer. Wales rugby shirt have a number of training wedges available.

Rugby Gloves

These are more for training and are not worn like in football as there is no goal keeper position in rugby. If you would like to wear gloves whilst playing check with your team and league to see if there are any rules or regulations concerning rugby gloves.

Marking Cones

Another great training accessory. Marking cones allow you to mark out obstacles or pointers to try reach during training exercises. A set of these is essential for any training session.

Team Kit Bags

A rugby team will need at least one of these to carry all the kits in and some of the training kit in. Look for a bag that is big enough for your whole team to save the number of bags required.
